With Brazil having made such a splash on the international scene in recent years, not to mention winning the rights to host both the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics, many are curious about it. Is it all it appears it to be: beaches, Carnival, rain forests and soccer? Why is Portuguese spoken there and not Spanish like in other South American countries? Is the economy still booming? What were the reasons for the massive protests in June of last year?
With this podcast we hope to answer all these questions and more. We will explore 500 years of history and culture as well as what is known about Brazil before the first Europeans arrived.
This won’t be a linear trip through Brazil’s history, no. While we will do a series of episodes to cover the basic history, in general we will cover a mix of whatever topics listeners express interest in as well as some topics we like as well. Events, people, culture, politics, geography, and history: the sky’s the limit!
